Why Dick Eney Matters

Fan culture is easy to lose. A joke in a fanzine, a nickname, an acronym, a feud, a club name, or a local convention tradition can disappear if no one writes it down. Eney’s importance lies in treating that informal material as worth recording. He helped make fandom legible to itself.

The Fancyclopedia Legacy

Fancyclopedia is not a normal encyclopedia of authors and books. Its value comes from recording how fans actually spoke, argued, remembered, and organized. Eney’s contribution belongs to that tradition of fannish self-documentation: half reference work, half cultural memory, and half inside joke, if fandom is allowed three halves.

That style matters because science fiction fandom has always been unusually self-aware. Fans created terms for their own activity, their own departures, their own ideals, and their own absurdities. Without compilers such as Eney, many of those terms would survive only in scattered fanzine scans and private recollections.

Why Reference Work Is Fanac

Reference work can be a form of fanac. It is fannish activity because it serves the community, preserves history, and gives later readers a way into older conversations. Eney’s work shows that documentation is not separate from fandom; it is one of the ways fandom continues.
